Nasya Karma (Nasal Cleansing)

Treatment Overview

Nasya Karma is a specialised Ayurvedic treatment aimed at relieving sinus congestion, phlegm buildup, migraines, respiratory issues, and stiffness or pain in the head, neck, or jaw. It is also used in the management of conditions such as Bell’s palsy (facial paralysis), epilepsy, Parkinsonism, speech disorders, goitre, tooth and gum diseases, hearing impairments, tinnitus, skin conditions, certain mental health disorders, hormonal imbalances, and infertility.

By helping to eliminate toxins from the head region (above the clavicle) and improving circulation, this therapy supports recovery and overall balance in these conditions.

Therapeutic Benefits

  1. Clears sinus congestion and promotes proper sinus drainage.
  2. Reduces phlegm accumulation and respiratory discomfort.
  3. Improves blood circulation in the head, face, and shoulders.
  4. Provides deep relaxation by releasing muscular tension in the upper body.
  5. Helps manage hormonal imbalances by directly stimulating the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis
  6. It alleviates stress, anxiety, mental fog, and tension headaches by reducing Vata imbalances in the head

Who It’s For & How Often

  1. Recommended for individuals experiencing sinus blockage, phlegm-related issues, migraines, or respiratory discomfort.
  2. Suitable for stress-related head and upper body tension.
  3. Good for recovering from hormonal imbalances and nerve-related disorders.
  4. The frequency of sessions depends on the severity of symptoms and the doctor’s recommendations.

Why Doctor Guidance & Skilled Therapists Matter

A doctor’s consultation ensures that the therapy is customised to the patient’s specific condition. The selection of herbal oils and the Pottani Thevili technique is carefully determined to maximise safety and therapeutic benefits.

Qualified therapists perform the treatment using precise techniques, including facial massage focused on facial marma points, facial fomentation, and Nasya oil application (nasal drops), ensuring effective delivery while avoiding irritation or discomfort.

The Treatment Process

The therapy begins with an oil massage of the head, face, and shoulders to relax muscles and stimulate blood flow. This is followed by a face Pottani Thevili (herbal bolus fomentation) to relieve tension and support sinus drainage. Finally, specific herbal oil drops are administered into the nostrils to clear sinuses, reduce phlegm, and improve respiratory function. The entire process is performed using precise Ayurvedic techniques, tailored to the patient’s condition.

Before Nasya treatment, three sessions of Shirodhara or head massage should be performed as pre-procedures, and herbal smoke inhalation (Dhoomapana) should be done after Nasya as a post-procedure.

How the Therapy Works

Massage and fomentation help improve local circulation, relax tense muscles, and stimulate lymphatic flow in the head and shoulders. Herbal facial fomentation supports the clearing of nasal passages and enhances the delivery of medicinal compounds from the oils. Nasya oil drops penetrate the nasal mucosa, promoting detoxification, reducing inflammation, and stimulating the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian (HPO) axis, while supporting respiratory health.

Together, these therapies help improve sinus and lung function, relieve headaches, and promote overall relaxation.

Personalized Care & Variations

The herbs and oils used in Nasya Karma can be tailored to address migraines, sinusitis, phlegm-related conditions, and respiratory issues. The therapy may also be combined with oral Ayurvedic medications or other treatments such as Shirodhara, Shirsha Abhyanga, Washpa Sweda, and Dhoomapana (herbal smoke therapy) for enhanced benefits.

What Makes This Treatment Unique

Nasya Karma is unique in that it combines head and shoulder massage, facial herbal fomentation, and precise nasal oil therapy to address both physical and respiratory concerns. Beginning with a doctor’s consultation ensures a highly personalised approach, making it an effective therapy for sinus health, migraine relief, and overall wellbeing.

We personalize your treatment

Your treatment plan, crafted for your body

In Ayurveda, treatments and care are strongly guided by an individual’s body constitution (Prakriti) and current imbalances (Vikriti). To ensure the most suitable therapies for your needs, we recommend connecting with our wellness consultants for personalised guidance rather than selecting treatments on your own—except for standalone treatments, Ayurveda packages, and day retreats, which can be enjoyed independently.
